Are opal glass plates really lead-free and food safe?
Yes. They are made from silica, soda ash, and limestone — no lead or cadmium is added during production. Every batch is tested per FDA 21 CFR and EU 10/2011 standards, confirming zero heavy metal migration into food. Unlike ceramic plates that rely on glazes which may contain lead, opal glass gets its white color from calcium fluoride bonded within the glass — permanently stable and non-leaching.
No. Opal glass is chemically inert. It does not react with boiling liquids, acidic juices, or fatty foods. Testing shows no detectable substance migration even above 100°C. By contrast, melamine tableware releases formaldehyde when heated past 70°C according to Germany’s BfR research. This makes opal glass a far safer option for daily hot-food serving.
